Meet Our Volunteers: Becky and Shirley

Meet our bookstore volunteers Becky Jansa and Shirley Heber!

At REACH Literacy, our volunteers are the heart and power of our bookstore. They bring their passion for reading and commitment to our mission, helping us foster a love of books and literacy throughout the Sioux Empire community. Today, we are excited to introduce you to two of our dedicated volunteers, Becky and Shirley, who have answered some fun Q&A questions to help us get to know them better!

Years at REACH Literacy:

Becky: 2 years

Shirley: 6 years

Why do you volunteer at REACH?/What is your favorite part about volunteering at REACH?:

Becky: My love of books and the places where books are found.

Shirley: I love everything about it - the smiles of the children when they get to take home a “new” book, conversation with other book lovers, learning of new authors to try, I could go on and on…

What’s one thing you think everyone should know about REACH?:

Becky: Much of REACH's operation is run by volunteers, so the profits are directed to their literacy programs to benefit readers.

Shirley: The unbelievable inventory of books of every genre and how new many of the books are.

Which book made you fall in love with reading?:

Becky: Black Beauty, I received it from Santa as a young girl.

Shirley: Oh my, I was reading at age 4 (as I have been told) - but I loved Trixie Belden, Black Beauty - probably even Dick and Jane!

What’s a book you think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?:

Becky: The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss. A wonderful message about acceptance.

Shirley: Huckleberry Finn

What’s your favorite way to discover new books?:

Becky: Try reading new authors. If you enjoy one, you can read everything by that author!

Shirley: Suggestions by someone who has read an author who is new to me.

We are so grateful for the dedication and passion of our volunteers like Becky and Shirley, who bring their love of books and community spirit to REACH Literacy. Their efforts help us promote literacy and provide a welcoming space for book lovers of all ages.
