Meet Our Volunteers: Zoie and Judy

Meet our bookstore volunteers Zoie Roghair and Judy Abbas!

Volunteers are the backbone of REACH Literacy, bringing energy and enthusiasm to our bookstore and making it possible to run our bookstore. Today, we’re delighted to spotlight Zoie and Judy, two of our amazing volunteers. Through their Q&A responses, you’ll get a glimpse into their love for books and their dedication to our mission.

Years at REACH Literacy:

Zoie: Almost 1 year

Judy: 6 years??

What do you do at REACH?

Zoie: I usually help with organizing the books and making sure they are alphabetized. I also help check out customers and find books if they are looking for anything specific.

Judy: Volunteer Extraordinaire or so I’ve been told. Sort, bundle, put books into inventory - etc.

Why do you volunteer at REACH?

Zoie: I volunteer at REACH because I love books, and I want to be an English teacher and/or something to do with English. My favorite part about REACH is either helping someone find a book they are excited about or shelving/organizing the books — I enjoy seeing all the titles!

Judy: I have watched REACH grow by leaps and bounds — I love it that I had a part in it. It keeps me from dealing with my own chaos, and it keeps me busy and productive.

What’s one thing you think everyone should know about REACH?

Zoie: Everyone should know that REACH has a variety of books and is always getting donations of fun other books, so REACH has lots of options!

Judy: It’s the best “used” bookstore bar none, and our mission is really needed in Sioux Falls to help others better their lives!

Which book made you fall in love with reading?

Zoie: I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, and it was the Wings of Fire series.

Judy: Freckles & A Girl of the Limberlost. My teacher read it to us in 3rd grade.

What’s a book you think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?

Zoie: I think everyone should read The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder.

Judy: The Midnight Library — love the message.

How has being a part of REACH Literacy impacted your reading habits?

Zoie: When I shelve books, now I just pick up that book and read because I see it, and I’m like, “Oh, that looks interesting!” It’s broadened my reading selection for the better.

Judy: It has widened the genres that I read.

What’s your favorite way to discover new books?

Zoie: Either selling them at REACH or hearing about popular or underrated really good books from others.

Judy: Have them recommended to me.

What book would you want to see turned into a theme park?

Zoie: I would want to see the Wings of Fire series turned into a theme park.

Judy: The Midnight Library or Remarkably Bright Creatures.

We are incredibly grateful for the unique talents and commitment that volunteers like Zoie and Judy bring to REACH Literacy. Their unique skills and dedication not only help us promote literacy but also enrich the lives of everyone who walks through our doors. We couldn’t do it without them!
