Meet Our Volunteers: Carrie and Jackie

Meet our inventory and bookstore volunteers Carrie Jaeger and Jackie Jones!

The volunteers at Reach Literacy are the driving force behind our mission to make literacy accessible to the Siouxland Community. Whether they're adding books to our inventory or working in our bookstore to engage with the community, Carrie and Jackie have shown unwavering dedication to Reach Literacy. This week, we had some fun with a lighthearted Q&A session with them, and we're excited to share their insights and experiences with you.

What do you do at Reach?

Carrie: I research the value of books (usually vintage) and set a fair price to sell them, and other tasks as assigned.

Jackie: I volunteer for the BEE A Reader program, and I work in the bookstore at least once a week.

Why do you volunteer at Reach?/What is your favorite part about volunteering at Reach?

Carrie: I love books and reading, and like being around like-minded people. It is a way I can help promote literacy efforts, and it’s fun for me!

Jackie: I think literacy is so important. It’s the key to so many things, and reading expands our minds. I love all of the staff and volunteers and helping customers find their next great reads!

What’s one thing you think everyone should know about Reach?

Carrie: It is the cleanest, most beautiful bookstore in the area. You can discover a variety of treasures — from neat vintage books to classics to kids' books to bestsellers.

Jackie: How much they do to enhance the quality of life in our community and support our community.

Which book made you fall in love with reading?

Carrie: It was the Twilight series when it first came out — so fun after reading college textbooks!

Jackie: Being able to learn about places and people so different from me. It brought the world closer.

What’s a book you think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?:

Carrie: I always recommend The 5 Love Languages and The Road Back to You.

Jackie: All the books! Read all the things that bring you joy!

Which fictional world would you love to live in?

Carrie: I would like to live in the Bridgerton world for a bit!

Jackie: Avonlea from Anne of Green Gables.

How has being a part of Reach Literacy impacted your reading habits?

Carrie: I have added so many more books to my to-read list, and I now donate most owned books I read so someone else can enjoy them.

Jackie: I have increased my reading and have read a lot differently — so many great recommendations from the Reach crew.

What’s your favorite way to discover new books?

Carrie: Browsing the shelves and displays at Reach (or the library) and getting recommendations from other readers.

Jackie: Ask folks around me what things they are reading/would recommend, or check out Bookshop.org or Goodreads.

What book would you want to see turned into a theme park?

Carrie: A Court of Thorns and Roses (and the rest of the series)!

Jackie: Any book by Murakami — that would be worth the money!

We are incredibly thankful for the commitment and enthusiasm of volunteers like Carrie and Jackie, who bring their passion for books and community to Reach Literacy. Their hard work allows us to promote literacy, operate our bookstore, and manage our eBay site, making books and literacy accessible to everyone.
