Meet our bookstore volunteers Maris Hauger and Patty Grimsell!
We are delighted to highlight the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, who play a crucial role in the success of REACH Literacy and all that we strive for. This week, we are thrilled to introduce two more of our hardworking volunteers, Maris and Patty, who have also taken the time to answer our Q&A so we can get to know them better!
Years at REACH Literacy:
Maris: 9 years
Patty: 2.5 years
Why do you volunteer at REACH?/What is your favorite part about volunteering at REACH?:
Maris: I admire their mission and am happy to help. I enjoy the people - staff and customers - and I like exposure to books and seeing what’s new.
Patty: One of my dreams was to own a little bookstore (like Meg Ryan!). Volunteering here makes my dream true (sort of!). I love talking about books with customers.
What’s one thing you think everyone should know about REACH?:
Maris: The service it provides to the community.
Patty: That REACH has an awesome bookstore + your purchase helps to support literacy within Sioux Falls. I’m still surprised at the number of people who aren’t aware of the store.
Which book made you fall in love with reading?:
Maris: Probably the Bobbsey Twins + the Nancy Drew books in grade school.
Patty: Betsy-Tacy, Trixie Belden, and Nancy Drew (I’m dating myself here!)
What’s a book you think everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?:
Maris: Too many to pick one.
Patty: As of this winter (2024), Kristin Hannah’s The Women.
How has being a part of REACH Literacy impacted your reading habits?:
Maris: Trying different authors and genres.
Patty: I have always been a voracious reader, that continues...
What’s your favorite way to discover new books?:
Maris: Trying different authors and genres.
Patty: Listening to MPR radio and being part of a book club.
Maris and Patty, and all of our wonderful volunteers here at REACH Literacy make it possible for us to serve the community, providing everyone access to books and literacy skills! We are incredibly grateful for their unwavering support and commitment to our mission.
